Even today the return of Christ is not imminent.
We read in 2 Thessalonians 2:
1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him
2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
The Apostle Paul clearly tells us that 'THAT DAY ( the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him )' will not happen until at least two things happen FIRST:
1. a falling away, and
2. that man of sin ( the ANTICHRIST ) be revealed;
So again it is obvious that the COMING of our Lord Jesus Christ is NOT IMMINENT.
There are events that are imminent, but must preceed the coming of the Lord, and the main event we are waiting for is the confirmation of the Covenant. This even marks the beginning of the final week (a week of years, or 7 years). Then approximately 8 months after the confirmation of the Covenant we will see the Antichrist rise to power where he will "stand up", and ultimately in the middle of the 7 year period he will sit in the Temple of God claiming to be God. This is the moment we will know for sure who he is, and this is when the Great Tribulation begins.
